Click Here to see The CALLA Model
"The Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach (CALLA) is an instructional model for second and foreign language learners based on cognitive theory and research. CALLA integrates instruction in priority topics from the content curriculum, development of the language skills needed for learning in school, and explicit instruction in using learning strategies for academic tasks.
The goals of CALLA are for students to learn essential academic content and language and to become independent and self-regulated learners through their increasing command over a variety of strategies for learning in school."

Metacognition: An Overview (Summary)
Metacognition refers to higher order thinking which involves active control over the cognitive processes engaged in learning. Metacognition enables us to be successful learners, and has been associated with intelligence. Because metacognition plays a critical role in successful learning, it is important to study metacognitive activity and development to determine how students can be taught to better apply their cognitive resources through metacognitive control.
"Metacognition" is often simply defined as "thinking about thinking." In actuality, defining metacognition is not that simple, there is much debate over exactly what metacognition is. The term "metacognition" is most often associated with John Flavell . According to him, metacognition consists of both metacognitive knowledge and metacognitive experiences or regulation.

Metacognition
Possible ways to foster Metacognition
- Connect between prior
knowledge with new content.
- Identify what the
students will be learning.
- Explain what the goals of
a class
- Interactive activities for meaningful learning
- If the students have
questions, help them to clarify in the process

- Ask students if the
acquired the goals.
What is automaticity?
Automaticity is
an automatic response; it is the ability to do things unconsciously. This is
the result of a repetitive activity.
How do we develop automaticity?
We can develop
automaticity with practices and repetitive activities, so we will be able to
save in our brain.
Create an example
of how teachers can change the amount of " extraneous cognitive load"
on an assignment?
The teacher uses prior
knowledge to connect students with new content. Also the teacher guides the
student with interactive resources, reducing stress and facilitating learning.
When have you felt
that you had a "full" cognitive load?
I have felt that I
had a full cognitive load, when I have to read a long text and do not understand
everything, when I have to study for many tests in a short time, also when I do
not understand new contents and the teacher does not explain.

Reflection of Book Touchstone 1
A textbook is a result of a work of a group of people that study what is the best for the students, considering this point people thinks that all the textbook are perfect but is not always the truth. Touchstone 1 is a textbook using in Chile in university to student can learn English easiest. In our evaluation of this textbook is that this book has the objectives and instruction very clear, and have activities after 3 activities and is very useful for the metacognition of the students. It's very useful and all learning styles like kinesthetic activities, visual and auditory. It has a lack of cognitive tempo and not possibilities of a new input in the activities, is to systematic . Is very easy to understand for students and for the teacher, and it has a lot of layouts. In conclusion , is not a perfect book , but is very close to it.
